EMSB expands upon its strong success rate in annual report

For the exercise of its functions and powers, every school board in Quebec must  establish a Commitment-to-Success Plan which creates a mobilization around student-centered goals and objectives. The English Montreal School Board  has now made this document public as part of the 2018-2019 annual report, deposited at the December 19 Board meeting. It will be presented to the Parents Committee and the public on Thursday, January 16 (6:30 pm) at 6000 Fielding.

As of June 2018, the seven year graduation and qualification rate for the 2011 cohort is at 92.4 percent, the highest of any school board in the province. The six year graduation and qualification rate for the 2012 cohort is at 91 percent. The Board is on track to possibly exceed the 2018 success rate.

At the secondary level  there has been an increase in the order of 10 percent in the success rate in French Second Language, programme de base (the Reading component) as well as a two percent proficiency rate increase in English Language Arts. The subject areas that have maintained a stable success rate are: Science & Technology, History and Histoire, English Language Arts, and French Second Language, programme enrichi. The subject area that has experienced a decrease in the order of six percent is Math CST. 

At the elementary level in Cycle 3, there have been slight increases in the order of  two to three percent   in the success rates of English Language Arts, Reading and Writing components.  Mathematics, as well as the French Second Language Reading component have decreased in the order of four percent.

Equity-The seven-year graduation and qualification success rate of students with special needs increased from 66.1  in 2016 to 73.4 percent  in 2018.The Disadvantaged schools maintained their success rates, while the Advantaged schools increased about three percent. Finally, there has been a steady increase in the graduation rate of male students, while female students had a slight decrease at about one percent.

There is a slight improvement in the Facility Condition Index (FCI) for the 2017 year. Many of the projects are ongoing and will be completed within the next year or two, which will have a significant impact on the index.

Overall, elementary students perceptions of victimization by bullying, school safety and anxiety has remained relatively stable. For secondary students, the perceptions of victimization by bullying and school safety are relatively stable, while perceptions of anxiety is on the rise.

The Board is in the second year of a five-year plan to address the wellness and good mental health of its employees.

With respect to the goal of adding the 60 minute initiative for physical activity, the Board has added seven new schools and is on track to reaching its target by 2022.
